YouTube Watch Party

Watch YouTube Together with Your Partner

SyncCouch makes YouTube the easiest platform to watch together — no Premium required, no shared account, no '3, 2, 1 — go' countdown from the early 2010s. Install the free Chrome extension, open any YouTube video (music video, vlog, two-hour video essay, full film), create a room, share the link, and you're synced in under 30 seconds. When one of you pauses, the other pauses. When either of you seeks, both seek. When you navigate to the next video in a playlist, SyncCouch's adapter re-attaches to the new player element without a room disconnect. Voice chat is unlimited and free, so you can talk over the video like you're on the same couch. Video chat is free for 30 minutes a week — enough for the weekly movie.

Why use SyncCouch for YouTube?

Platform-specific features that make your watch party seamless.

Ad-Aware Sync

SyncCouch detects YouTube ads (pre-roll and mid-roll) and pauses sync during ad playback. When content resumes for both, sync automatically re-engages.

SPA Navigation Recovery

YouTube replaces video elements when you navigate between videos. SyncCouch detects these swaps with a MutationObserver and re-attaches instantly.

Works with Free YouTube

No YouTube Premium required for either of you. SyncCouch works with free YouTube — both users see their own ads independently.

Voice & Video Chat

Talk or video-call your partner while watching. Voice chat is unlimited and free. Video chat offers 30 minutes per week free, perfect for weekly movie night.

YouTube-specific things to know

YouTube is a single-page app, which means it swaps out the video element without reloading the page every time you click a new thumbnail. Most watch-party tools break here because they attach to the video element once, on page load, and never re-attach. SyncCouch uses a MutationObserver to detect when YouTube replaces the player and re-binds instantly — you can browse, queue, and jump between videos without leaving your room. A few YouTube-specific caveats worth knowing: (1) Ads are served per-account, so your pre-roll and your partner's pre-roll will be different durations. SyncCouch pauses sync during ads on either side and re-engages when both of you are back on the actual content. (2) YouTube Shorts have a completely different player architecture (swipe-based vertical) and are not synced — open full-length videos at youtube.com/watch for sync. (3) YouTube Music videos work, but the Music app (music.youtube.com) has a different player and sync there is unreliable — use youtube.com instead. (4) Premieres and live streams are technically supported for play/pause, but seek sync doesn't make sense during live content — treat live together as a simultaneous-watch experience rather than synced. (5) Age-restricted videos require each person to be signed in; SyncCouch can't bypass YouTube's gate. (6) If you're on a restricted network (school, office) that blocks parts of YouTube's CDN, the embed may fail for one of you even though it works for the other.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does SyncCouch sync YouTube?

SyncCouch uses a Chrome extension that detects your YouTube video player and syncs play, pause, and seek actions with your partner in real time — under 300ms latency. It works with standard YouTube videos at youtube.com/watch.

Does YouTube need a Premium account?

No. SyncCouch works with free YouTube for both partners. The catch is that each person sees their own ads at their own times, so sync pauses during ads and re-engages when both of you are back on the video. Premium skips this dance.

What happens when we click on a different video?

YouTube uses single-page navigation, which means the video element changes without a page reload. SyncCouch detects this swap with a MutationObserver and re-attaches to the new player within a few hundred milliseconds — no room disconnect.

Can we watch YouTube Shorts together?

Not yet. Shorts have a completely different player architecture (swipe-based vertical scroll) and are not supported in the current release. Standard YouTube videos at youtube.com/watch are fully supported.

Does it work with YouTube playlists?

Yes. When the playlist auto-advances to the next video, SyncCouch re-attaches to the new player for both partners. For best results, both partners should open the playlist URL so auto-advance triggers in the same order for both.

Can we watch age-restricted YouTube videos together?

Yes, but each person needs to be signed into their own YouTube account that can access the video. SyncCouch doesn't bypass age gates — if one of you sees the 'confirm your age' prompt, that person needs to accept it before the video loads.

What about YouTube Live streams and Premieres?

Live streams and Premieres work for simultaneous watching, but seeking doesn't make sense during a live event. SyncCouch will sync play/pause for live content, treating it as a shared real-time experience.

Does YouTube Music (music.youtube.com) work?

YouTube Music has a different player architecture and is not fully supported in the initial release. For music videos, use the main youtube.com URL — most official music videos are available there with reliable sync.

Why do my ads and my partner's ads look different?

YouTube serves ads per account based on your browsing history and region. Your partner will see different ads at different times. SyncCouch pauses sync during ads on either side, so you're only perfectly aligned during the actual content.

Is SyncCouch free?

SyncCouch is free to use. Playback sync, text chat, voice chat, emoji reactions, and AI recommendations are all free. Video chat has a free tier of 30 minutes per week — enough for a weekend movie night — with paid upgrades coming later.

Does it work on Edge or Brave?

Yes. SyncCouch works on any Chromium-based browser including Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera, and Vivaldi (version 116+). Firefox is not currently supported because SyncCouch uses Chrome extension APIs that Firefox implements differently — a Firefox build is on the roadmap.
