Crunchyroll Watch Party

Watch Crunchyroll Together with Your Partner

Anime hits different when you watch it with someone. SyncCouch is a free Chrome extension that syncs Crunchyroll playback between you and your partner — pre-roll ads on the free tier, mid-roll ads on the ad-supported tier, subtitle toggles, dub switches, and 24-episode binges across a single weekend. Both of you stream directly from your own Crunchyroll accounts. SyncCouch doesn't re-encode anything, doesn't route video through a server, and doesn't break Crunchyroll's terms. You get full resolution, your chosen sub or dub, and a draggable video-chat window so you can see your partner react to the episode-22 twist in real time. Rooms persist for up to 6 hours — enough for the longest shonen marathon.

Why use SyncCouch for Crunchyroll?

Platform-specific features that make your watch party seamless.

Pre-Roll & Mid-Roll Ad Sync

SyncCouch detects Crunchyroll's ad breaks on the free tier and pauses sync until content resumes, keeping both viewers aligned through every episode.

Subtitle-Safe Sync

Toggling subtitles or switching subtitle language won't trigger false sync events. SyncCouch only responds to real playback actions (play, pause, seek).

Binge-Ready

SyncCouch persists your room for up to 6 hours. Binge a full season with your partner without worrying about session timeouts or re-pairing.

AI Anime Recommendations

Tell SyncCouch your mood — "something wholesome" or "dark and intense" — and get anime suggestions filtered by Crunchyroll availability in your region.

Crunchyroll-specific anime binge tips

Crunchyroll migrated from its legacy player to the current Brightcove-based player during the Funimation merger, and most of its quirks come from that architecture. The free tier shows pre-roll ads before every episode and occasional mid-roll ads during longer episodes — SyncCouch pauses sync during these and re-engages when the content returns. Each partner sees their own ads, so your timings will differ by a few seconds, which is expected. Premium tier skips ads entirely. A few Crunchyroll-specific things to coordinate with your partner: (1) Sub vs dub selection is per-user — both of you can watch the same episode with different audio tracks, but subtitle toggles (like switching from English to Spanish subs) are also local and don't sync. Pick your preferences independently. (2) Simulcast episodes (new episodes released hours after Japan airing) may have different subtitle-availability windows — if you're watching a simulcast the moment it drops, one of you may get subs before the other. (3) Episode navigation is not auto-synced — if you finish episode 1, both of you need to manually click into episode 2 (or use the Up Next prompt when it appears). (4) Crunchyroll's watch history is per-account, so the 'Continue Watching' shelf won't match between you — navigate by series, not by history. (5) Funimation content that was merged into Crunchyroll works the same as native Crunchyroll titles. (6) For the best marathon experience, both partners should pause their system sleep settings — Crunchyroll's player pauses when your laptop sleeps, and waking up mid-episode can briefly desync until the room resynchronizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does SyncCouch sync Crunchyroll?

SyncCouch uses a Chrome extension that detects your Crunchyroll video player and syncs play, pause, and seek actions with your partner in real time — under 300ms latency. It works with the current Brightcove-based Crunchyroll player at crunchyroll.com.

Do both people need a Crunchyroll account?

Both users need access to Crunchyroll — free tier with ads or premium, either works. SyncCouch syncs playback between two browsers and does not share or stream video content.

What about ads on the free Crunchyroll tier?

SyncCouch detects pre-roll and mid-roll ads and pauses sync automatically. When content resumes, sync re-engages. Each user sees their own ads since ads are served per-account, so your timings will differ by a few seconds — that's expected.

Do subtitles affect sync?

No. Toggling subtitles on/off or changing subtitle language does not trigger playback events, so sync between you and your partner is unaffected. Each of you can pick your own subtitle language independently.

Can we watch dubbed anime together?

Yes. As long as both users select the same episode, SyncCouch will keep playback in sync regardless of audio track. One of you can watch the Japanese sub while the other watches the English dub — the playback clock stays aligned even though the audio differs.

Does SyncCouch work with simulcast episodes?

Yes. Simulcast episodes (new episodes that drop hours after the Japan TV air) play the same as any on-demand content. One small caveat: subtitle tracks for some languages may not be ready at the exact release moment — if one partner sees subs and the other doesn't, wait a few minutes for all tracks to publish.

What about Funimation content on Crunchyroll?

Funimation content merged into Crunchyroll after the acquisition works identically to native Crunchyroll titles. No separate setup — if it's in Crunchyroll's catalog, SyncCouch syncs it.

Can we watch a full 24-episode season in one sitting?

Yes. SyncCouch rooms persist for up to 6 hours, which covers a full one-cour (12-episode) binge comfortably. For longer marathons, one partner can recreate the room and both rejoin — takes about 20 seconds.

Does the Up Next auto-advance work in sync?

Episode-to-episode navigation is not fully auto-synced in the initial release — when one of you finishes an episode, both should click into the next one manually. This avoids the desync that happens when one partner's Up Next countdown advances before the other's.

Is SyncCouch free?

SyncCouch is free to use. Playback sync, text chat, voice chat, emoji reactions, and AI recommendations are all free. Video chat has a free tier of 30 minutes per week — enough for a weekend movie night — with paid upgrades coming later.

Does it work on Edge or Brave?

Yes. SyncCouch works on any Chromium-based browser including Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera, and Vivaldi (version 116+). Firefox is not currently supported because SyncCouch uses Chrome extension APIs that Firefox implements differently — a Firefox build is on the roadmap.
