JioHotstar-specific things to plan for

JioHotstar's player went through a major rewrite during the Disney+ Hotstar → JioHotstar rebrand, and it differs from the older Hotstar player in a few ways that matter for sync. The free-with-ads tier shows pre-roll ads (skippable after 5 seconds on some titles, unskippable on others) and occasional mid-roll ads during longer content. SyncCouch's JioHotstar adapter pauses sync during these ad blocks and re-engages when content resumes — since ads are served per-account, your timing and your partner's will differ by a few seconds, which is expected. Premium tier skips ads entirely and sync stays engaged continuously. Regional licensing is the bigger thing to plan around: JioHotstar's catalog is aggressively geo-fenced. If one of you is in India and the other is abroad (even with the same subscription), some titles simply won't play outside India, and SyncCouch can't fix that — it's a JioHotstar licensing decision. Confirm the title is available to both partners before starting a room. Live cricket and IPL streams use a completely different player with HLS adaptive bitrate logic that isn't in scope for the initial release — wait for the dedicated live-sports mode on our roadmap. Multi-audio tracks (choosing between Hindi, Tamil, English dub) are per-user preferences and don't sync, which is what you want — pick your own dub independently.

When is JioHotstar support launching?

JioHotstar support is in final integration testing and will launch shortly after the initial Netflix + YouTube + Crunchyroll release. Join the waitlist on this page and we'll email you the day it goes live — no spam, one email.

How will SyncCouch sync JioHotstar?

SyncCouch will use a Chrome extension that detects your JioHotstar video player and syncs play, pause, and seek actions with your partner in real time — under 300ms latency. It handles the free-with-ads tier and the premium tier differently, since ad behavior differs.

Do both people need a JioHotstar subscription?

Both users need access to JioHotstar. This can be a free account (with ads) or a premium subscription, and you don't both need to be on the same tier. SyncCouch syncs playback — it does not share or stream video content between accounts.

What happens during ad breaks on the free tier?

SyncCouch will detect when ads are playing and pause sync. Once your content resumes, sync automatically re-engages. Ad timing differs between users since ads are served per-account, so each person sees their own ads and then reunites on the show.

Does SyncCouch work with live sports on JioHotstar?

Not in the initial release. Live sports streams (cricket, IPL, football) use a different HLS-based player architecture that requires its own adapter. A live-sports mode is on our roadmap but not in the first version of JioHotstar support.

Can I use SyncCouch from outside India?

SyncCouch works wherever JioHotstar itself works. The bigger limitation is JioHotstar's regional licensing — many titles are geo-fenced to India only, and a VPN may break playback. Confirm the title is available to both partners before starting a room.

Does it work with JioHotstar Bollywood films?

Yes. All on-demand content — Bollywood films, regional cinema, Hotstar Originals, Disney titles, Star network serials — will be in scope when JioHotstar support launches. The constraint is live sports, not language or genre.

Does SyncCouch work with multi-audio tracks (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu dubs)?

Yes, and each partner can choose their own audio track independently. JioHotstar's audio-track selection is a local preference and doesn't sync, which means one of you can watch in Tamil while the other watches in Hindi — with playback still perfectly in sync.

Will it work with a Jio Fiber or Jio SIM bundled plan?

Yes. JioHotstar bundled via Jio telecom plans, standalone JioHotstar Premium, and the free-with-ads tier are all supported. SyncCouch works with the jiohotstar.com web player regardless of how you got access.

Is SyncCouch free?

SyncCouch is free to use. Playback sync, text chat, voice chat, emoji reactions, and AI recommendations are all free. Video chat has a free tier of 30 minutes per week — enough for a weekend movie night — with paid upgrades coming later.

Does it work on Edge or Brave?

Yes. SyncCouch works on any Chromium-based browser including Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera, and Vivaldi (version 116+). Firefox is not currently supported because SyncCouch uses Chrome extension APIs that Firefox implements differently — a Firefox build is on the roadmap.
